Most young people might be unfamiliar with what SCCP used to be in the past: in 1937, it was called “Matsuyama Tobacco Plant of the Monopoly Bureau of the Taiwan Governor’s Office” during the Japanese government. Later, the Taiwan Provincial Monopoly Bureau took over the factory and renamed it as the Songshan Tobacco Plant of the Taiwan Provincial Monopoly Bureau. (There was even a ballpark here!) It was Taiwan’s first modern tobacco factory and created high economic output for the country. In 1998, because of declined demand, the plant stopped all production. In 2001, the Taipei City Government designed the defunct tobacco factory as Taipei’s 99th historic site. This is an important historical site in Taiwanese culture.
On November 15th, 2011, the park was opened to the public and positioned as “Taipei’s creative hub” by its current name to cultivate originality and talents. The goal for the park’s replanning isn’t about attracting new industries but figuring out how to stimulate creativity and energy for innovation to facilitate development trends in today’s cross-industries. This is the reason why so many young people love visiting the site.
#Old Buildings New Thinkings
“Songshan Culture and Creative Park”
To this day, SCCP has successfully transitioned into one of the favorite sites to visit for youngsters and hipsters. It is also one of the most popular tourist spots in Taipei. If you have friends coming from abroad, definitely bring them here! The park has old buildings preserved from the Japanese occupation days. The park’s exterior is an old, “rugged” industrial style, with simple and minimalistic concrete buildings. Inside the park, you’ll find lots of products at SongYan Style Gallery and SongYan Gallery. It’s a great place to find Taiwanese designer products. If you’re looking for unique gifts for your friends and family, you won’t regret coming here!
The “Baroque Garden” looks out of this world. It’s a great place to take beautiful, Instagram-worthy pictures. If you’re tired of shopping around, or looking for a perfect ending to a day in SCCP, come to this area for a memorable picture!
